The things that made me a misfit are my biggest advantage

I dropped out of university.

Average grades. No clear direction. A growing feeling that the traditional corporate path my Chinese parents said I was supposed to follow just wasn't built for me.

As immigrant parents, all they wanted was for me to get a degree and work a stable 9-5. And honestly — who could blame them. They'd sacrificed everything to give me a better life.

But that's not the life I wanted.

For a long time, I thought that made me less. Less capable. Less likely to succeed. Less qualified to sit at a table with people who had done it the "right" way.

I was wrong.

What I've figured out — slowly, and only by refusing to quit — is that the things that made me a misfit are my biggest advantage. I'm creative. I'm resourceful. I'm obsessed with the details. I back myself.

My path looks nothing like what a "founder" is supposed to look like.

At 14, I started a photography business shooting nightlife across Sydney. In my second year of university, I was President of a student society — and then left.

My parents had a version of success mapped out for me. I had a different one. The truth is, I had no idea what I was doing. I just knew the doctor, lawyer, accountant path wasn't for me.

So I started figuring it out. Self-studied Mandarin from zero to fluency in 400 days. Taught myself design. Just finished a UX certificate. Now I'm learning to code, building my first app solo — using AI as my co-founder.

None of it was linear. All of it was necessary.

I'm building a FinTech app for people who, like me, were never given a framework that worked for how their brain actually operates. More on that soon.

But this isn't just about the app. It's about my story.

It's for the people who didn't get the grades. Who took the long way. Who've been told — directly or indirectly — that they're not the right kind of person to build something that matters.

I'm here to prove otherwise. In public. In real time.
